Keenan: Brain stimulation making breakthroughs for disorders like ADHD

A decade ago, when I wrote my book Technocreep, I talked about “wireheading” – the practice of directly stimulating the pleasure centres of the brain with small electric currents. That term comes from science fiction. In a 1969 Larry Niven story called Death by Ecstasy, a character apparently starves to death while stimulating his brain. Experiments on animals show that this is indeed a possibility. Perhaps the most disturbing tale was recounted in, of all places, the UCLA Law Review. It describes “a dolphin who, inadvertently left in a pool with the (brain stimulation) switch connected, delighted himself to death with an all-night orgy of pleasure.” That story has never been authenticated.

    1. Keenan: Healing and hawking in the waiting room

The COVID-19 pandemic taught us a lot about telemedicine and virtual visits with the doctor. Still, there are times when an office visit is necessary. Recently, I had the annoying feeling that an eyelash was poking into my eyeball. I figured it would go away, and when it didn’t, I made an appointment with my eye doctor. I normally see him once a year, mainly for reassurance that my eyes are healthy and to get a renewed prescription for reading glasses.

    2. Keenan: Social contact, connections at the heart of being happy

The longest-running scientific study of human happiness published some results recently that give profound insights into what constitutes “the Good Life.” Aristotle raised that question almost 2,500 years ago and concluded it was a life of virtue and morality. We now know that it is also a life of good and close relationships.

    1. Keenan: Fatherhood changes the male brain

Recent research showed that pregnancy leads to “selective and robust changes in neural architecture and neural network organization.” In other words, it remodels the brain of a woman to help her understand and respond to cues coming from her infant.

    4. Keenan: How pets can keep men sane

A heart-stopping video clip from the recent Florida storm coverage showed an elderly man gingerly climbing into a helicopter basket to be evacuated from his flooded home. He wasn’t clutching family photos or his laptop computer. He had his obviously beloved cat in a carrier. I’m pretty sure they both made it to safety, but my heart goes out to the people, and the pets, who didn’t survive the recent storm disasters in the U.S. and Atlantic Canada.

    5. Brooks: A wake-up call breakfast for men’s health

Men have a three-times higher rate of suicide than women. On average, they die five years younger and are 67 per cent less likely to visit a doctor. And, of the top 13 causes of death in Canada – including all cancers, cardiovascular disease, accidental and non-accidental trauma – men lead women in 12 of the 13 causes. Yet men are often stubborn and stoic about their mental and physical health problems.

    6. Keenan: Guys should exercise in the evening – here’s why

While male and female bodies are alike in many ways, it’s fascinating to see some ways in which they vary. Many drugs act differently on men and women, and hormones are a factor in many diseases. Now we’ve just learned another way in which we diverge. The optimal time of day to exercise seems to be different for males and females.

As we hear more about monkeypox, another disease that was once simply called “the pox” is making a resurgence in Canada. Rates of syphilis have been rising since 2001, and most provinces and territories have now declared outbreaks. Alberta Health Services reports that “the rate of syphilis has increased by more than 10 times since 2014”. In recent years, the province saw its highest level of syphilis since the 1940s. That was back in the pre-antibiotic era before penicillin became the routine treatment for this disease.

The bombshell leak of the draft U.S. Supreme Court decision overruling Roe v. Wade has sent shockwaves through America. While it appears that Canadian judges and politicians have little appetite to re-open the abortion debate, people certainly are talking about abortion again.

It’s wonderful to see smiling human faces, walking through the world without masks. However, while we may be done with COVID-19, it’s not done with us. Shocking data from the United Kingdom’s statistics agency revealed that 1 out of 13 people there had been infected with the COVID-19 virus in just a single recent week.

The 1965 book,  You Are All Sanpaku , by Sakurazawa Nyoiti, left a real impression on me, both for its content and its delightfully accusatory title. It introduced the macrobiotic diet to the Western world and argued powerfully that we have lost touch with our bodies and the natural forces of the universe. Nyoiti claimed this makes people prone to ill health, violence, and accidents.

    6. Keenan: How COVID-19 will change men’s health forever

Medicine is chock full of jargon. Aside from allowing precision, it serves to impress, mystify, and sometimes even reassure the patient. For example, you might feel a bit silly seeing a physician for an ingrown toenail — though they can actually be quite serious, especially if you are diabetic. Somehow, it just feels better if the doctor writes it up as onychocryptosis or unguis incarnates, choosing the Greek or Latin term.
